Bloom's taxonomy, the working version
Learning objective
Use Bloom's six levels as a sense-check on the verbs in a unit's learning objectives.
01 · Hook
Why this matters
Bloom's taxonomy is widely known and widely misused. You do not need to memorise it. You need to use it as a sense-check.
02 · Core
The ladder
Remember
List, name, identify, recall.
Understand
Describe, explain, summarise, classify.
Apply
Use, demonstrate, solve, perform.
Analyse
Compare, examine, differentiate, attribute.
Evaluate
Critique, defend, prioritise, justify.
Create
Design, draft, compose, plan, build.
The sense-check: read your unit's objectives. If they are all at the Remember or Understand level, the unit is a quiz. Bring at least one objective up the ladder.
03 · Practice
Try it
Choose
Which set of objectives is most likely to produce real learning?
04 · Carry
One thing to take back to work today
Look at your project's objectives. Are they all at the bottom of the ladder? Promote one of them today.
