Will AI Steal My Job? · Role analysis
Teaching assistants support teachers and pupils in classroom settings — providing targeted support for pupils with SEND, helping small groups, preparing resources, and providing pastoral support. Higher Level Teaching Assistants may lead groups independently. TAs are often the closest adult relationship for vulnerable pupils.
Section 01
| Task | AI impact | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Support individual pupils with learning difficulties | 🟢 Safe | One-to-one support for pupils with dyslexia, ADHD, or ASD requires physical presence, relationship, and adaptive support that responds to the child in real time. |
| Prepare and organise classroom resources | 🟡 Changing | AI tools can generate differentiated worksheets and resources quickly, reducing prep time. But physical preparation and organisation in the classroom space is still hands-on work. |
| Run intervention groups for literacy and numeracy | 🟡 Changing | Structured literacy interventions (Read Write Inc, Toe by Toe) have an app dimension, but the TA who delivers them with encouragement and adapted pace is irreplaceable for many pupils. |
| Monitor and record pupil behaviour and progress | 🟡 Changing | Digital observation and recording tools are emerging, but TAs make real-time judgments about when to prompt, when to back off, and what to flag — this is professional discretion. |
| Support pupils with physical and personal care needs | 🟢 Safe | TAs who support pupils with physical disabilities, manual handling, hygiene routines, or medical needs are providing physical care that cannot be automated. |
| Communicate with parents about pupil progress | 🟡 Changing | Routine updates can be communicated via apps and platforms, but sensitive conversations about a child's behaviour or wellbeing require a trusted human relationship. |
| Complete administrative paperwork and records | 🔴 High exposure | Structured record-keeping forms, intervention logs, and SEN paperwork are increasingly digital and auto-populated. Admin burden is reducing through technology. |
| Assist with lunch, break, and transition supervision | 🟢 Safe | Physical presence during unstructured time — managing social dynamics, preventing incidents, supporting pupils who struggle with transitions — is irreducibly human. |
