"They all write emails. They all do summaries. One is apparently better. Nobody agrees which one."
— Office Man

What is it?

Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini are large language models — AI systems that generate text in response to prompts. They are made by different companies (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google) and they all do broadly the same things: drafting, summarising, answering questions, rewriting. For everyday tasks, the differences between them are small. The noise you hear about one being dramatically better than the others is mostly benchmarks, marketing, and enthusiasm. None of it reflects what you will actually experience on a Tuesday afternoon.

Why now?

All three released major updates in the last year. All three now have free tiers and paid tiers. All three are being bundled into workplace software — Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Salesforce. That is why the conversation has become impossible to avoid. Your organisation may be licensing one of them already. The question of which one is best has become a workplace question, not just a tech question. And because the tools are expensive at scale, everyone wants to believe they picked the right one.

The human angle

The person asking this question is not confused about technology. They are confused about what decision they are supposed to be making. The answer is: probably no decision. If your organisation has licensed a tool, that is your tool. If you are choosing for yourself, spend a fortnight with whichever one your colleagues use — shared knowledge is worth more than a marginal quality difference. The anxiety about picking wrong is bigger than the actual risk of picking wrong.

What to do

Use what your organisation has licensed. If you are choosing independently, try the free tiers on your actual tasks — not demos, not benchmark tests, not hypotheticals. Pick one and get good at it. The skills transfer. If you work with long documents, Claude handles these well. If you live in Google Workspace, Gemini fits more naturally. If you want the widest range of add-ons, ChatGPT has the most established ecosystem. Beyond that: stop agonising and start using.
