Extensibility and connectors
Connectors bring non-Microsoft 365 content into Copilot’s grounding story. They also bring indexing work, permissions mapping and often meters.
What it is
Microsoft 365 Copilot extensibility includes Copilot connectors (Graph connectors) that index external content into Microsoft Graph so Copilot and agents can reason over it within the user’s permissions. It also includes plugins / API actions and declarative agent knowledge sources. Extensibility is how you answer “what about the CRM / wiki / ticket system?” without building a separate chatbot first.
Where it sits in the stack
Connectors sit under Copilot and agents — they enrich Chat/Copilot answers and Agent Builder / Studio knowledge. Custom retrieval can also live in Foundry. Prefer connectors when you want Graph-native permissions and Microsoft Search indexing.
Key features / capabilities
- Index SaaS and line-of-business content into Graph for Copilot grounding.
- Respect source ACLs when configured correctly — bad mapping equals oversharing.
- Use connector content as knowledge in declarative agents (Agent Builder).
- API plugins / actions for write-back and transactions (higher governance bar).
- Admin controls for which agents and connectors are allowed in the tenant.
Who it is for / when to use
Integration owners and knowledge teams who need Copilot to see systems outside Microsoft 365. Start with read-only grounding; add actions later.
Connectors vs plugins vs Studio tools
Keep the vocabulary straight. Connectors index content into Graph for retrieval. Plugins / API actions let agents do things in other systems. Studio tools and flows are how low-code makers wire actions with Power Platform governance. Many programmes blur these and then wonder why security reviews stall. Draw one diagram: read path (connectors) vs write path (actions), with different approval bars.
Cost layer
Indexing and agent usage can meter. Separate connector platform cost from Copilot seats on the cost sheet. See Managing cost and the feature matrix.
Risk and governance
Permission mapping is the risk. Test with a least-privilege account before enterprise publish. More: Managing risk.
Adoption tip
Ship one connector with one agent and one measure before building a connector catalogue. Habits: Adoption.
