Copilot for SharePoint
Copilot for SharePoint is work grounding and authoring help on top of your intranet and libraries — not a separate search product.
What it is
With Microsoft 365 Copilot, people can ask questions over SharePoint content they can access, draft pages, and use site agents for scoped Q&A. Semantic indexing and Graph permissions determine what appears. SharePoint remains the system of record; Copilot is the interface layer.
Where it sits in the stack
App + Graph layer under Microsoft 365 Copilot. Site agents and Agent Builder sit beside it. Studio and Foundry are for heavier automation or custom retrieval.
Key features / capabilities
- Natural-language answers grounded in permitted SharePoint/OneDrive content.
- Page and content drafting assistance in SharePoint authoring surfaces (as rolled out).
- Site agents for scoped knowledge experiences.
- Works with sensitivity labels and existing sharing model.
- Admin controls for restricted content discovery and agent availability.
Who it is for / when to use
Knowledge workers on a maintained intranet. Invest in information architecture first — Copilot amplifies both good and bad libraries.
Knowledge work is still curation
Copilot does not fix a rotting intranet. If versions conflict, owners are unclear, and retention is a rumour, answers will be confident and wrong. Pair Copilot rollout with a short curation sprint: owners, retention labels, and a “source of truth” page per domain. Then let Copilot amplify the cleaned hub — not the landfill.
Cost layer
Primarily the Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on (or E7). Site agent pay-as-you-go may also apply for some users. See Managing cost and the feature matrix.
Risk and governance
Labelling and least-privilege sharing are prerequisites, not afterthoughts. More: Managing risk.
Adoption tip
Pilot on one well-owned hub site. Measure “time to find the policy” before and after. Habits: Adoption.
